STEELHEAD
Generally
caught in colder weather, often when the snow is flying, steelhead
(rainbow trout) are tremendous fighters. If you like the sound
of line screaming off your reel, you'll want to tie into one of these.
We'll take
steelies in the river or in Lake Michigan. Once the run starts,
it doesn't much matter where you go, just as long as you go. The
average fish is probably around 5 or 10 pounds, but it's not unheard
of to get hold of one in the 20-lb range.

SKAMANIA
If there's
a better all-around fighter than the steelhead, it's this steelhead
hybrid. Bred to run in the summer months, skamania are ever
better fighters and higher jumpers than 'regular' steelies. It's
not unusual to have one throw your lure as it jumps four feet out of
the water immediately after you set your hook.
These fish
are similar in size to the 'regular' steelhead and are also taken in
both the river and Lake Michigan.

COHO
& KID'S COHO SPECIAL
Maximum:
3 Kids
|
KIDS AGED
8-12 RECEIVE A DISCOUNT ON ALL SHORELINE COHO
TRIPS WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY A PAYING ADULT. LIMIT 2 KIDS
PER ADULT. |
Some time in the spring,
from as early as late-March and going as long as mid-May, coho
salmon make their mad dash up the river. When they stage at the
river mouth is the perfect time to bring your youngster(s) out for a
crack at their first salmon.
To encourage you to bring
out your youngsters, we offer significant discounts to all children
coming to fish with us for coho (and for perch), whether you use our
lodging or not.
Each adult may bring no
more than 2 kids with a maximum of 3 kids fishing at any one
time. In this way, there will be plenty of adults to watch all
the kids so there won't be any accidents.
Non-fishing adults are
welcome and will only be charged for their stay in our cottage, if
appropriate. Adults wishing to fish with their kids will be
charged the regular rate.
Coho, while powerful for
their size, typically run under 4 lbs and so are perfect for kids age
8 and above. Stocky kids younger than 8 might be able to handle
a coho, but this fish is going to pull hard and can even make an
average-sized kid move his feet.
Fortunately, we can fish
in such a way that an adult can be right next to the youngster as he
fights his coho. So bring your video camera and your kids'
favorite snacks (and maybe his Gameboy) and we'll try to get your kids hooked on
Great Lakes salmon fishing!!

CHINOOK
(KING) SALMON
A
brut. Twenty years ago, there were a few caught every year in
the 35 - 40 lb range. That's more rare now, but 20 - 25 lb are
not out of the question.
Late-May
and late summer are generally the best times for these brawlers.
We'll get kings sometimes in Lake Michigan and sometimes in the
river. Be ready for a fight.
